TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Pope Francis' passing, leader of the Universal Church, on April 21, 2025, requires the search for a new leader. This search will be conducted through a Conclave scheduled on May 7, 2025. There will be 135 Cardinal Electors from the College of Cardinals, representing 71 countries.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, Vatican News reported that this Conclave will be quite different as the cardinals involved will no longer be European-centric. This is also one of the legacies of Pope Francis, who wants the Catholic Church to focus on the peripheries, thus restructuring the College of Cardinals.
For the first time, representatives from Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia, East Timor, and Singapore, will participate as electors for the new pope with their native cardinals. This means they will not be represented by anyone else. In addition to these three Southeast Asian countries, 9 other countries whose voting will be conducted by their own native cardinals include Haiti, Cape Verde, the Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, Sweden, Luxembourg, Paraguay, South Sudan, and Serbia.
So far, there are 23 Cardinals from Asia, 4 from Oceania, 37 from the Americas, 18 from Africa, and 53 from Europe. While European dominance remains, cardinals from non-European countries far outnumber those from Europe.
The Cardinal Electors also vary greatly in age. The youngest cardinal is 45-year-old Cardinal Mikola Bychok, born in Australia to Ukrainian parents. On the other hand, Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra from Spain is the oldest cardinal.
Unfortunately, two of the 135 members of the College of Cardinals cannot participate. They have confirmed their inability to participate in the Conclave to select Pope Francis' successor due to health reasons.
