Over 380 Arrested in Los Angeles as ICE Crackdown Triggers Protests Across U.S.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced on Wednesday that it has arrested more than 385 people since riots erupted in Los Angeles, with over 200 of those arrests taking place after a citywide curfew was enforced on Tuesday night.

As reported by USA Today, the protests that led to violence in Los Angeles, California were triggered by a brutal sweep operation conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under President Trump's order to find illegal immigrants.

Authorities said two individuals have been charged with throwing firebombs during the five-day unrest, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to make the controversial decision to deploy 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the area.

Federal prosecutors have charged Emiliano Gardno Galvez, 23, of Paramount, and Wrackkie Quiogue, 27, of Long Beach, with possession of unregistered destructive devices. Both could face up to 10 years in federal prison.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said at least nine people are facing federal charges in connection with the demonstrations.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell earlier confirmed that one officer had been injured by a firecracker.

"I've watched Molotov cocktails and fireworks, shot mortars being launched out of tubes at our officers," he said.

McDonnell added, "Let’s not forget our officers face uncertain and often dangerous situations every day. And their risk to their lives has been even greater in these last few days."

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the imposition of the curfew was a direct response to the "escalation of chaos" resulting from the deployment of the National Guard and the arrival of 700 Marines, who are currently stationed 30 miles south of the city for training.

Protests denouncing immigration raids and expressing solidarity with demonstrators in Los Angeles have since spread nationwide. On Tuesday night, dozens were arrested during protests in New York, Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott also authorized the deployment of the National Guard.

The U.S. Northern Command confirmed that 700 active-duty Marines are expected to be fully deployed in Los Angeles within 48 hours. According to officials, these Marines have completed their mission training and "will be assigned with National Guard units."

"Their activation and inclusion in the task force was intended to provide adequate numbers of forces to provide continuous coverage of the area in support of the Lead Federal Agency," the officials stated, referring to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE.

National Guard Commander Major General Scott Sherman emphasized on Wednesday that his troops would operate in support of ICE: "They’re in the lead. We’re supporting them. It’s really about protecting federal facilities and federal personnel as they do their job."

The Marines, trained in crowd control, de-escalation techniques, and proper use of force, will join the 2,100 National Guard members already on the ground, Northern Command officials added.
