TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple has announced an update for iCloud Shared Albums, allowing iPhone users to share photo albums across platforms. This capability will support full resolution and is scheduled to launch starting this fall.
The feature was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 as part of the iOS 27 and macOS 27 updates. With this change, photo albums created by iPhone users can be shared with users of other devices without a reduced image quality.
According to Phone Arena, the tech giant based in Cupertino, United States, did not specify in detail the platforms that will be supported. However, cross-platform photo sharing support through iCloud is expected to include Android and Windows.
For a long time, sharing photo albums between iPhone and Android users has been a challenge due to access and compatibility limitations. Many users have resorted to third-party apps such as WhatsApp or Google Photos to share photos in groups.
Apple's move is seen as an effort to improve the interoperability of the iCloud service with ecosystems beyond its own devices. However, Apple has not explained whether Android users will only be able to view shared albums or also add photos and synchronize fully as is available in Google Photos.
In comparison, Google Photos has provided cross-platform shared album features since 2015. The service allows Android, iOS, and web users to view and add photos to shared albums in their original quality.
The presence of cross-platform album sharing support in iCloud is expected to facilitate users who use more than one device ecosystem, including families or groups consisting of mixed iPhone and Android users.
