TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia's Sunda Strait began falling on coastal areas of Serang Regency, Banten, on Saturday night, causing residents to complain of stinging eyes and disrupting school activities.
Sanan (42), a resident of Kampung Pasauran Satu in Umbul Tanjung Village, Cinangka District, spoke to reporters while visiting the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post in Serang Regency on Saturday night. He noted that the concentration of volcanic ash around residential areas began to intensify around 5:00 PM WIB.
"There was a lot of dust starting at five in the evening. When riding my motorcycle, my eyes would hurt if I didn't wear a helmet. The dust stuck to my body, making it uncomfortable. There was even a lot of dust settling on the floor in front of my house," he said.
Sanan added that the continuous rumbling sounds and tremors, which had persisted since Friday night (September 4), prompted him to visit the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post in Pasauran personally to verify the volcano's safety status.
Ajat Sudrajat, the principal of SDN Pasir Menteng in Cinangka District, shared similar concerns.
Ajat visited the observation post that night to personally confirm the volcano's status and condition, seeking valid information to relay to students and their parents at the school.
He confirmed that the spread of volcanic ash was significantly affecting comfort and physical health during outdoor activities.
"On the way here, not wearing a mask caused considerable throat irritation, and my eyes stung if I didn't wear glasses. Although the ash isn't clearly visible in the air, you can see it piling up here at the Krakatau observation post," he said.
Ajat considered obtaining direct information from the observation post crucial, given that the eruption activity had sparked public anxiety and led to low student attendance at school. Furthermore, Ajat stated that the tremors and booming sounds from the eruption are actually considered routine phenomena by most Pasauran residents, though some have taken the initiative to seek safety.
"The community remains safe, as these occurrences are common and natural for the people of Pasauran. However, there are indeed some residents who have taken the initiative to move to higher ground for safety," he said.
