TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will soon depart peacekeepers under the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago briefs the soldiers, warning them to maintain discipline while carrying out their duties abroad.
Djamari stresses that personal behavior of the soldiers will affect Indonesia's international reputation. "Don't let your guard down. Non-compliance will not only affect safety, but also the nation's reputation," he says in a statement on Tuesday, May 12.
"The burden rests on you now," he adds, while leading the coordination meeting on the peacekeeping mission at the Indonesian Armed Forces' Peacekeeping Mission Center on Monday.
A total of 744 Garuda Contingent troops are scheduled to depart for Lebanon at the end of May 2026. In his directive, Djamari emphasizes the importance of discipline, capability, and quality of training as the main factors for the troops' safety during their service in conflict areas.
He mentions that rigorous training is an essential part of preparing the troops before overseas deployment. "Rigorous training is a form of welfare provided to our troops. With rigorous training and discipline, our troops can execute their duties effectively," says Djamari.
As the Director of the Peacekeeping Mission Coordination Team, Djamari said Indonesia has a long history with peacekeeping operations, while citing his involvement in the United Nations Emergency Force II mission in Sinai in the 1970s.
Indonesia, he said, is aiming to strengthen Indonesia's contribution to global peacekeeping missions. According to Djamari, President Prabowo Subianto has showcased attention to enhancing the readiness of the troops and positioning TNI officers strategically within the UN mission structure.
He stresses that not only are the troops carrying the country's mandate, they are also representing Indonesia's honor overseas. Therefore, each peacekeeper is required to truly internalize the purpose of their duty and maintain professionalism during their service.
"You bear the nation's duty to contribute to world peace. On your shoulders, there are the Red and White flag and the blue beret of the UN. We put immense trust and hope in you," he says.
