TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 M rocked Simeulue and parts of Aceh on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at 11:56 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The tremor occurred amid existing flooding and landslides caused by Tropical Cyclone Senyar the day before.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the epicenter at sea, specifically 1 kilometer south of Simeulue, Aceh, at coordinates 2.61 degrees North Latitude (NL) and 95.83 degrees East Longitude (EL), with a hypocenter depth of 14 kilometers. This location places the earthquake within the megathrust zone.
Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, explained that the earthquake is categorized as shallow and was caused by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate pushing beneath the Eurasian Plate. Analysis of the source mechanism indicates that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.
"Modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami," Daryono stated in a written release, confirming that the agency did not issue a tsunami warning.
The intensity of the shaking varied across different regions, measured on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale:
Simeulue: Intensity IV MMI, meaning it was felt by many people indoors during the day.
South Aceh: Intensity III-IV MMI.
Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Southeast Aceh, Abdya, and Singkil: Intensity III MMI, where the tremors were felt clearly inside homes, as if a truck were passing by.
Kabanjahe, Berastagi, Tiganderket, Pidie, and Lhokseumawe: Intensity II-III MMI, felt only by some people inside their homes.
Medan and Silangit: Intensity II MMI, where only a few people inside their homes felt light hanging objects swaying.
In his statement, Daryono revealed that reports of minor damage caused by the earthquake had been received. As of 1:00 p.m. WIB, BMKG monitoring results indicated the occurrence of 6 aftershocks, with the largest measuring 4.8 magnitude.
