TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said the public should be the one to assess his performance after President Prabowo Subianto praised his work despite their different political party affiliations.
Pramono made the remarks a day after Prabowo praised him during the inauguration of the Kelapa Gading-Manggarai Light Rail Transit (LRT) line in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 16.
“If I’m praised, let the public assess that,” Pramono said at the Jakarta Red Cross (PMI) building on Thursday.
During the inauguration, Prabowo acknowledged Pramono’s performance as Jakarta governor and said differences in political party affiliations should not prevent cooperation between the central and regional governments.
Prabowo said the primary responsibility of elected leaders is to serve the public.
“I have to admit, if there is a great governor, I will admit that he is great. Even though he is not from my party,” Prabowo said.
Prabowo noted that although the two sides had competed during the election, the central and Jakarta governments could now work together.
The president said such cooperation was possible when elected leaders recognized that they were serving the people.
“We can respect each other because we realize, deep in our hearts, that we were elected by the people,” Prabowo said.
Prabowo also called on other regional leaders to work effectively to develop their respective regions.
“Earlier, the governor reported that Jakarta’s growth has increased and that investment has been extraordinary. So, this shows that when leaders can work together, this nation will rise to become an extraordinary nation. I am confident that soon Indonesia, with all its problems, will rise toward the ideals of our nation’s founders,” Prabowo said.
