TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to hold a motor vehicle-free evening or Car Free Night. If realized, Car Free Night will take place every Saturday evening in the Capital city.
Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno conveyed the idea on Sunday, June 8, 2025. "We will try to organize Car Free Night," said the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician, as quoted from a written statement on Monday, June 9, 2025.
According to Rano, the provincial government is currently studying the plan for a Car Free Night in the Sudirman-Thamrin area of Central Jakarta. He did not specify the specific location for its implementation. Rano said the Car Free Night activities could start at 10:00 PM local time.
Rano mentioned several reasons why the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to hold Car Free Night. He said one reason is that many Jakarta residents exercise in the evening.
Additionally, Rano stated that Car Free Night is part of the strategy to make Jakarta more environmentally friendly. "This is also an effort to reduce carbon emissions," said the former governor of Banten.
He revealed that the Jakarta Provincial Government has the opportunity to conduct a trial of Car Free Night in the Sudirman-Thamrin area after the peak event of Jakarta's 498th anniversary. He said the peak event is expected to take place at the end of June 2025.
Spokesperson for Jakarta's governor and vice governor, Chico Hakim, stated that the plan for implementing Car Free Night is still in the internal discussion stage. "Everything will be thoroughly and carefully considered," said Chico in a short message on Monday, June 9, 2025.
According to Chico, the government will evaluate the pros and cons of implementing a Car Free Night before adopting it as a policy. He said that Governor Pramono Anung and Vice Governor Rano Karno want the policy to benefit the public, not harm it.
According to Chico, several aspects need to be considered before Car Free Night can be implemented on a regular basis. These include the impact on the economy and the mobility of Jakarta residents.
Some considerations include the routes and the time of implementation, its influence on business activities in malls and restaurants along the Sudirman-Thamrin area, and the routine mobility of workers who use the protocol road.
