Jakarta Flood Control Still Relies on Outdated Equipment, Says Governor

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has acknowledged that the capital's flood control equipment remains outdated. He expressed his intention to upgrade the systems to better manage flooding in the city.

Pramono highlighted the outdated method used for cleaning reservoirs in Jakarta. “Currently, it still relies on heavy excavators to remove the sludge,” he said during a visit to Pluit Reservoir in North Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

He noted that such equipment is no longer commonly used in developed countries, which have transitioned to using advanced pumps capable of suctioning sludge directly from channels and waterways.

Despite recognizing the need for modernization, Pramono pointed out that the process would require significant financial resources. He stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing a detailed plan for the procurement of modern equipment.

Pramono also said that flood monitoring and coordination in Jakarta have improved. According to him, the enhanced coordination has led to quicker water recession and more effective flood control.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician emphasized that this progress is already visible on the ground.

Flooding remains a persistent problem in Jakarta. Earlier this month, heavy rains inundated several areas of the city, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

To address the broader issue, Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol said he had met with Jakarta Governor Pramono and West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi.

The three officials discussed strategies to mitigate flooding and agreed to rehabilitate the upstream area of the Ciliwung River Basin.

“We have discussed and agreed on the need for rehabilitation in the Puncak area, covering 7,000 hectares,” Hanif said in an interview with Tempo at his official residence on Galuh Street, Jakarta, on Sunday night, July 6, 2025.

Hanif explained that funding for the rehabilitation project in Bogor Regency would come from the Jakarta Provincial Budget (APBD). He stressed that addressing the source of the problem upstream would be more effective than focusing solely on downstream solutions.

“It's better to resolve the issues at the source,” he said.
