TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel's attack on Tehran, Iran, led to the death of the Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, on Friday morning, June 13, 2025. The attack also targeted and killed two prominent Iranian nuclear scientists, Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, according to Iranian news media.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, pledged to retaliate against the attack. "With this crime, the Zionist regime sealed for itself a bitter and painful destiny and will definitely see that [destiny] brought upon it," he said in a statement.
Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, declared a state of emergency shortly after the attack began. Katz warned the public that "a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future."
Following Israel's attack, Iran retaliated by launching over 100 unmanned aerial vehicles or drones towards Israel. The attack took place a few hours after Israel bombed dozens of locations in the country.
Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin stated in a release quoted by Middle East Eye that all air defense systems had been operational to intercept the threat. "This is a different event to what we've experienced thus far, and we're expecting difficult hours," he said.
The state news agency of Jordan reported that it intercepted many missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles entering its airspace. Meanwhile, Israel's public broadcasting agency reported that Israel began intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles over Syria. The country's Channel 12 reported that its air force intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles over Saudi Arabia.
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 showed the skies above Israel, Jordan, and Iraq nearly empty around 08:30 local time.
On Friday, Qatar Airways announced the cancellation of flights to Iran and Iraq. Emirates Airlines stated that they had canceled flights to several countries, including Iran, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon.
Israel launched a major attack on Iran in the early hours of Friday, citing that the action was taken because the Islamic Republic had begun building nuclear warheads. Iran stated that its nuclear program was peaceful and denied seeking nuclear weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was aimed at addressing the threat from Iran to the survival of Israel. He added that it would take days. "We struck at the heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment programme," Netanyahu said in a televised speech.
"We targeted Iran's main enrichment facility in Natanz. We targeted Iran's leading nuclear scientists working on the Iranian bomb. We also struck at the heart of Iran's ballistic missile programme."
