TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Australia remains a favorite getaway for Indonesian travelers, with 236,000 Indonesian tourist arrivals recorded from January to March 2025. This marks a full recovery from pre-COVID levels and a 12.2 percent increase over the same period last year. Over the 12-month span ending in March 2025, the number of Indonesian visitors to Australia rose 15 percent year-on-year.
Jennifer Doig, General Manager for South and Southeast Asia at Tourism Australia, said Indonesia is now one of the fastest-growing markets for Australian tourism. "Indonesia is a key market for us. Its post-pandemic recovery has been among the fastest," she said during a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony with Dwidaya Tour in Jakarta on Thursday, June 12.
The MoU, valid for three years, aims to expand Australia's tourism promotion reach across Indonesia. Over the next few years, the campaign will highlight Australia not only as a leisure destination but also for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) in cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Semarang, Medan, Balikpapan, and Makassar.
Tourism Australia is also encouraging Indonesian tourists to explore multiple states across the country and try the wide range of travel experiences on offer.
Dwidaya Tour's Chief Operating Officer, Hendri Yapto, confirmed a notable surge in Indonesian travel to Australia. "In the first quarter of 2025, we saw a 29 percent increase in demand for Australian travel packages compared to the same period last year," he said.
From Halal Friendly to Stunning Landscapes: Australia's Appeal for Indonesian Travelers
Hendri noted that the appeal goes beyond iconic wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and diverse cultures. It's also about Australia's well-developed tourism infrastructure.
"Australia offers a memorable and exciting experience for Muslim travelers, high-end tourists, and fans of sports and music from Indonesia," he said.
Several Australian regions now provide halal food and prayer facilities for Muslim visitors.
According to Tourism Australia research, Indonesian travelers are especially drawn to attractions in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Canberra, as well as the country's stunning natural scenery, wildlife, and beaches.
