Indonesian Influencer Deported from Myanmar After Amnesty

7 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully repatriated an Indonesian citizen, identified by the initials AP, from Myanmar. The Instagram celebrity's return followed a seven-year prison sentence and was the result of extensive diplomatic lobbying by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Yangon.

"Following the seven-year prison sentence, which had become legally binding (inkracht), and in coordination with AP's family, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon submitted a diplomatic note to the Myanmar authorities requesting amnesty for AP," said Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Rolliansyah "Roy" Soemirat, in a written statement on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

The Repatriation Process

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon formally requested amnesty from the Myanmar authorities, working in coordination with AP's family. Consequently, on July 16, 2025, the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a diplomatic note to the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon, confirming that the State Administration Council had granted amnesty.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon accompanied AP when he left Myanmar on a flight to Bangkok," Roy said. AP was deported from Myanmar on July 19, 2025, via Thailand, before finally arriving back in Indonesia.

AP's Verdict and Charges

Myanmar authorities arrested AP on December 20, 2024, on suspicion of illegally entering the country and meeting with an armed opposition group. He faced charges of violating several laws, including the Anti-Terrorism Law, the Immigration Law, and the Unlawful Associations Act.

"After going through the court process, AP was sentenced to seven years in prison," said Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on July 1. During the legal proceedings, AP served his sentence in Insein Prison, Yangon.

This case previously garnered public attention after Abraham Sridjaja, a member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), revealed the detention of an Indonesian Instagram celebrity during a working meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 30, 2025.

"There is one of our citizens in Myanmar who is being detained by the Myanmar government," he said, adding that the Indonesian citizen was accused of financing a rebel group.
