TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti announced that the government is introducing artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as optional subjects for students from elementary through high school. He noted that more than 50,000 schools are prepared to roll out the new subjects.
"It's not part of the curriculum, but an optional subject. It starts at fifth grade for elementary school, and in the first grade for junior and senior high school," said Mu'ti during his visit to Tempo’s office in Palmerah, West Jakarta, on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Mu'ti added that the initiative is supported by academic guidelines and defined learning outcomes, which are publicly accessible. He also stated that teachers, both those with ICT backgrounds and those from other disciplines, have undergone training to deliver these subjects.
"There have been training sessions. We have even reached the ninth batch. So, there are teachers who previously did not teach AI or coding, but are now being trained. There are also those who already taught ICT, and it's not very different," he said.
Although still optional for now, Mu’ti said the subjects could become more widely adopted in the future. He noted that thousands of schools, particularly private ones, have already introduced AI and coding as early as first grade of elementary school.
"In Jakarta, many have started since first grade," he said.
Despite the expansion plan, Mu’ti did not provide specific details on the readiness of public schools across different regions, particularly in terms of teacher availability and access to learning tools.
He offered only an approximate figure, suggesting that teacher numbers will match the number of schools prepared to implement the program.
"50,000 schools, so the number of teachers who are ready is roughly the same," he said.
