TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Palm oil exports in 2024 decreased by 8.65 percent to US$22.9 billion. In the preceding year, palm oil exports reached US$25 billion.
Palm oil (CPO) is a staple of exports from the manufacturing industry. "In 2024, this commodity contributed 11.54 percent to the export of the manufacturing sector," as stated in the Foreign Trade Statistics of Indonesian Exports 2024 published by the Central Statistics Agency on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Most of the CPO is exported to India, China, and Pakistan with values of US$3.9 billion, US$3.4 billion, and US$2.79 billion, respectively.
Most of this commodity's exports are loaded in Riau, North Sumatra, and East Kalimantan, reaching values of US$8.18 billion, US$3.2 billion, and US$2.6 billion, respectively.
Previously, Eddy Martono, the chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association (GAPKI), revealed several challenges in the palm oil industry. From 2020 to 2024, palm oil production grew by an average of only 0.42 percent per year. This was due to labor shortages and slow market dynamics.
Another challenge for the palm oil industry comes from the European Union. Eddy highlighted the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will take effect in December 2025.
He stated that this policy requires all products entering the European market to be proven free from deforestation practices with a minimum inspection rate of 3 percent. "This poses a significant burden, especially for small-scale farmers. We continue to make efforts to establish communications and prepare a national system to support compliance," he said on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
