TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police (Polri) has urged the public to heighten vigilance against scams and online gambling practices ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Public Relations Division, stated that the potential for football gambling is expected to escalate in anticipation of the world's premier football event.
"We must anticipate the rise of football gambling. We cannot allow this momentum to be exploited for unlawful activities that could result in public loss," Trunoyudo said in a statement on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Trunoyudo explained that citizens can report indications of fraud and illegal betting through the 110 complaint hotline. Furthermore, the National Police has established a dedicated complaint channel in collaboration with TVRI, the official broadcaster of the 2026 World Cup in Indonesia.
The National Police also encouraged the public to enjoy the excitement of the 2026 World Cup in an orderly and moderate fashion. According to Trunoyudo, excessive fanaticism carries the potential to trigger disturbances in public security and order.
In Indonesia, support for various participating nations often manifests in fanatical displays. For instance, during the 2022 World Cup, supporters of Argentina and the Netherlands in Ambon held massive convoys when their respective teams took to the pitch.
The 2026 World Cup is set to take place across three host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States, from June to July 2026. Meanwhile, TVRI, as the official broadcaster, plans to host public viewing events at 34 regional stations accessible to the general public.
