FINAL Fantasy XVI was launched on the Xbox Series X and S game consoles on Sunday, June 8, 2025, after being available on PlayStation 5 for two years. This launch was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase as part of the Summer Game Fest, as reported by Engadget on Monday, June 9, 2025.
The game can also be downloaded through the Xbox app for PC. Although Final Fantasy XVI has been available on PC through Steam and Epic Games Store since September 2024. Through purchasing on the Xbox platform, players can play this game across devices on console, PC, and cloud with automatic synchronization.
Xbox now offers the Final Fantasy XVI: Standard Edition which only includes the main game and the Complete Edition that comes with two additional expansions. Final Fantasy XVI on Xbox allows gamers to play almost all single player Final Fantasy series on this console. The only exception is the Final Fantasy VII remake which is not yet available. The Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade version is confirmed to be launched on Xbox later this year.

Released globally on Thursday, June 22, 2023, Final Fantasy XVI became the newest installment of the Final Fantasy franchise that has popularized the role-playing game (RPG) genre since 1987.
In Final Fantasy XVI, players are invited to explore a dark world filled with romantic scenes. The main character is a man in his thirties who is often labeled as a bandit and is not hesitant to use rough language. This is a significant difference from the previous series, especially Final Fantasy XV (2016), which tells the story of a road trip similar to a wealthy teenage gang in Grand Theft Auto.
The story of Final Fantasy XVI is set in Valisthea, a fictional world inhabited by six kingdoms. They are in a struggle to seize the mothercrystals, the natural resource that is vital to life. The territorial dispute intensifies due to a blight epidemic that causes severe drought in many places. The conflict to seize resources and living space, which is becoming increasingly limited, becomes the main focus of the story with an allegory of relevant climate change in our world.
Each kingdom in Valisthea has a Dominant, an individual chosen who can transform into giant monsters akin to kaiju in Japanese comics. The Eikon becomes the trump card that determines the course of the war. Its function is similar to the mass destruction weapons known in the real world.
In Valisthea, there are also bearers, humans born with natural magical abilities and do not depend on crystals as an energy source. The story begins when Clive is 15 years old and joins as a prospective member of the elite forces of the Rosaria Kingdom. Clive carries out his duties as the closest guard to his younger brother, Joshua Rosfield, who becomes the heir to the throne due to being a Dominant, the embodiment of the Phoenix, the firebird.
