TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has officially welcomed KRI Canopus-936, a newly built hydro-oceanographic support vessel developed in cooperation with Germany, marking a major addition to the country’s maritime research and naval capabilities.

The vessel arrived at the Kolinlamil Pier in Tanjung Priok on Monday, May 11, 2026, after traveling approximately 12,798.5 nautical miles from Germany. The ship departed from the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard on March 14, 2026.

Its arrival was welcomed by Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Agus Subiyanto, Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto, Navy Chief of Staff Muhammad Ali, and other senior military officials.

What Is KRI Canopus-936?

KRI Canopus-936 is a hydro-oceanographic support vessel designed for maritime surveys, underwater mapping, and oceanographic research. According to the Indonesian Navy, the ship can also support military operations and maritime security missions.

Muhammad Ali said the vessel is not only a survey ship but also Indonesia’s first naval platform capable of supporting submarine rescue operations.

“KRI Canopus-936 can be utilized as the first submarine rescue vessel owned by the Indonesian Navy,” Ali said in an official statement on Monday.

The four-star admiral added that the vessel can support submarine route mapping, sea mine detection, maritime patrols, and maritime intelligence operations.

Built Through Indonesia-Germany Cooperation

According to the Indonesian Navy Information Service, the 105-meter vessel was built over 36 months through cooperation between PT Palindo Marine Indonesia and Germany’s Abeking & Rasmussen.

The vessel is capable of operating continuously at sea for up to 60 days, allowing it to carry out long-term maritime missions and research expeditions.

Advanced Underwater Capabilities

KRI Canopus-936 is designed to conduct surveys from shallow waters to ocean depths of up to 11,000 meters, enabling operations in some of the deepest ocean trenches.

The vessel is equipped with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), which can be deployed for underwater exploration and data collection missions in difficult-to-reach maritime areas.

According to the Navy, the advanced equipment is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime mapping and underwater monitoring capabilities.

Supporting Indonesia’s Maritime Strategy

Indonesia’s Ambassador to Germany Abdul Kadir Jailani, who attended the handover ceremony in Bremen, said the vessel could strengthen Indonesia’s position as a major maritime nation.

He said the advanced hydro-oceanographic vessel would not only function as a research platform but could also become a center for integrating Indonesia’s national maritime data.

“This ship marks a new era of Indonesia’s maritime data independence,” Abdul Kadir said in a written statement.
