TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coach of the Indonesian U-23 national team, Gerald Vanenburg, is confident that his team can defeat Malaysia in the final match of Group A in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. The match will take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium on Monday, July 21, 2025, with the kick-off scheduled for 20.00 WIB.
Gerald's team currently tops the Group A standings with six points from victories over Brunei Darussalam 8-0 and the Philippines 1-0. Meanwhile, Malaysia is in third place with three points, after losing 0-2 to the Philippines and winning 7-1 against Brunei.
According to Gerald, Malaysia U-23 is strengthened by good players. "So, I think we have to try to win again in that match," said the Dutch coach to reporters, before starting training at the Madya Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
The 61-year-old coach said that the match against Nafuzi Zain's team is very important. He predicted that their opponents will also prepare well. The Young Tigers, he said, are not only good at playing but also a strong team. "They are a very good team," he said.
Nevertheless, Gerald is confident that his team will be able to achieve victory. "I am confident that we can win," he said. "If we think we can lose, we will lose. But I think we are ready."
The Young Garuda's match against Malaysia is expected to be intense. The third match of the ASEAN U-23 Championship 2025 group stage or AFF U-23 2025 will be crucial towards the semifinals.
