California Court Orders Google Pay US$314mn to Android Users for Data Misuse

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A California court has ordered Google to pay compensation of US$314.6 million, or approximately Rp5.1 trillion, to Android users in the state for collecting and misusing data without their permission.

This decision came following a class action lawsuit that has been ongoing since 2019. According to a report by 9to5Google, the jury stated that Google took data from Android devices even when the devices were not in use.

The lawsuit mentioned that users did not have a real way to opt out of data collection. The data acquisition was considered 'unavoidable' from the user's perspective, and this transfer process occurred automatically, which should not have been the case. Google was also said to use users' mobile data without their consent for personalized advertising purposes.

"The decision misunderstands services that are critical to the security, performance, and reliability of Android devices," said Google Spokesperson Jose Castaneda on July 2, 2025. Google argued that the data collected when the device was inactive was necessary to improve the security and performance of both current and future devices.

Google also stated that the data collection did not harm users as it was agreed upon through terms and conditions accepted by each user.

In recent years, Google has faced various legal challenges, including the recent ruling that declared the company a monopoly in the search engine business. Google is expected to appeal against this decision.
