BRICS Leaders Denounce Military Strikes on Iran as Breaches of International Law

5 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Leaders of the BRICS nations on Sunday, July 6, condemned the recent military attacks on Iran, labeling them a violation of international law and the UN Charter. The condemnation was part of a joint declaration issued at the BRICS Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025.

"We condemn the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since June 13, 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and express grave concern over the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East," the declaration stated as quoted by Anadolu.

The BRICS declaration further emphasized the importance of safeguarding nuclear facilities and ensuring civilian safety. It voiced concern over attacks on "civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under full safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

"In this context, we reiterate our support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at addressing regional challenges. We call upon the United Nations Security Council to be seized of this matter," the BRICS leaders affirmed.

Echoing this sentiment, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia's condemnation during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the summit.

"The Russian side reaffirmed its condemnation of the unprovoked military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory, carried out in violation of the UN Charter and international law, including the bombing of the country’s nuclear energy infrastructure facilities under IAEA guarantees," Tass news agency reported, citing a statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted by Anadolu.

Lavrov also expressed Moscow's readiness to support Iran in finding "mutually acceptable solutions, including within the framework of specific initiatives previously proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin."

The conflict between Israel and Iran erupted on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched airstrikes targeting civilian residences, military sites, and nuclear and civilian facilities across Iran. According to the Iranian Ministry of Health, these Israeli airstrikes resulted in at least 935 fatalities and 5,332 injuries.

In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones, which, according to data from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, killed at least 29 people and injured over 3,400. The hostilities ceased on June 24, 2025, following a ceasefire mediated by the United States.
