BREAKING NEWS: Air India Aircraft Carrying 242 Passengers Crashes

1 day ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Air India plane with more than 200 people onboard crashed near the airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, the airline and police officials said on Thursday, June 12, 2025, without mentioning whether there were any casualties.

The plane was headed to Gatwick Airport in London, Air India said, while police officials said the plane crashed in a civilian area near the airport.

The 242 onboard included 217 adults and 11 children, said a source as reported by France24. The airline said that 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian.

The flight tracking site Flightradar24 said the plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the most modern passenger planes in operation.

''At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates,'' Air India said in X.

A television channel reported that the crash occurred just after the plane took off. One channel showed the plane taking off over residential areas and disappearing from the screen amid a large ball of fire shooting up into the sky from behind houses.

The visuals also showed burning debris, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky near the airport.

The visuals also showed people being moved on stretchers and taken away in ambulances.

According to air traffic control at Ahmedabad airport, the plane took off at 1:39 p.m. local time from runway 23. The plane issued a "Mayday" call, indicating an emergency, but there was no response after that.

Flightradar24 also said they received the last signal from the plane several seconds after takeoff.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB, it said.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Indian aviation minister's office said Prime Minister Narendra Modi instructed them to provide all necessary support for the immediate rescue efforts.

The aviation minister's office added that all relevant agencies are on high alert and coordinated efforts are underway.

Ahmedabad is a major city in Modi's home state of Gujarat. The airport said it had immediately suspended all flight operations.

The last fatal plane crash in India involved Air India Express, the low-cost airline subsidiary.

In 2020, the airline's Boeing 737 skidded off the "tabletop" runway at Kozhikode International Airport in southern India. The plane overshot the runway, fell into a valley, and hit the ground nose first.

Twenty-one people died in the accident.
