TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that it will implement a weather modification operation in Jakarta and West Java starting Monday, July 7. Aimed at reducing rainfall, the technology will accelerate the dispersion of rain clouds before they reach the ground.
"We have been working with the Jakarta and West Java governments and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB)," said Tri Handoko Seto, the Deputy of Weather Modification at BMKG, during an online press conference on extreme weather and climate development on Monday.
Seto explained that the temporary command post for this operation will be located at Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport. Seto hopes that the upcoming rain in the next few days can be reduced through this operation. "To alleviate the suffering of those affected by floods," he said.
The Director of Weather Modification Governance, Budi Harsoyo, added that the artificial rain operation will commence on Monday afternoon and is planned to continue until Friday, July 11, 2025.
Harsoyo mentioned that the BNPB has prepared one aircraft for this operation. But BMKG is considering another aircraft reinforcement from the Indonesian Air Force, especially to reach upstream Greater Jakarta, which is considered crucial in flood mitigation.
BMKG monitoring shows that only about 30 percent of Indonesia's seasonal zones entered the dry season by the end of June 2025, only half compared to normal conditions.
The rainfall intensity remains high, including in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. For example, over the past weekend, the rainfall caused flooding and landslides in several spots. BMKG data shows that the rainfall was very heavy and even extreme, with more than 100 millimeters in a day.
