BMKG: Climate Change Fuels Unpredictable Extreme Weather

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that climate change is leading to increasingly unpredictable extreme weather patterns. The agency's Deputy of Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, highlighted that the Earth's temperature has risen considerably since the pre-industrial era.

"The Earth's warming is now 1.55 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline period, and this increase is accelerating year by year," he said during a virtual press conference on extreme weather and climate developments, held on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Sena explained that escalating greenhouse gas emissions from global human activities continue to accelerate this temperature rise. He noted that the impact is now clearly visible across many parts of the world, including Indonesia.

"When the atmosphere warms, it disrupts the hydrological cycle or the water cycle, leading to more extreme events in many places," he added.

Mitigating Impacts

According to Sena, effective spatial planning and infrastructure management are crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of hydrometeorological disasters. "Certainly, if our spatial planning is inadequate, extreme hydrometeorological events can trigger even greater disaster impacts, as we have seen," he cautioned.

He emphasized that infrastructure must be designed to manage changing and often heavier rainfall patterns over short periods. "So, we can manage the changes, which are actually determined by ourselves," Sena asserted.

Regarding the food and agriculture sector, Sopaheluwakan stressed the critical need for adaptation at the operational level. Farmers, he noted, must be able to adjust their planting strategies in response to increasingly uncertain seasonal conditions.

"In addressing this agriculture and food issue, we also need to look at a shorter scale, at the operational level, where farming activities are carried out from one season to another," he explained. Sena noted that in conditions like this year, where a dry season is still being accompanied by rain, farmers need to modify crop types and planting strategies.
