TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has engaged with Belarus, one of the world's largest potash fertilizer exporters, to strengthen the fertilizer supply chain to support national food security.
This strategic step was discussed in a meeting between the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, and the Belarusian Ambassador to Indonesia, Raman Ramanouski, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 5, 2025. The main focus of the discussion was increasing cooperation in the fertilizer sector, particularly with regard to potash, Belarus's leading commodity.
As one of the largest exporters of potash, Belarus holds a crucial position in the global fertilizer supply chain. Minister Sugiono also emphasized the relevance of this cooperation with the government's priority of creating food security.
This cooperation is supported by the positive trend in bilateral trade between the two countries. Last year, trade between Indonesia and Belarus surged by 44.1 percent, reaching $128.4 million. Indonesia's exports even saw a spectacular growth of 225 percent with a value of US$43.6 million.
Minister Sugiono sees Belarus as the gateway for Indonesia's economic expansion into the Eurasian region through the country's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Therefore, he invited Belarus to expand market access and business contacts while also pushing for the completion of the Indonesia-EAEU Free Trade Agreement.
The meeting also discussed other bilateral issues and the current global situation of mutual concern to both countries. The fertilizer cooperation is expected to lay the groundwork for stronger economic relations between Indonesia and Belarus.
