TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian men's singles shuttler Alwi Farhan secured the 2026 Australian Open title after sweeping past China's Dong Tian Yao with a straight-game victory of 21-13, 21-13 in the final at the Quaycentre in Sydney on Sunday.
"I feel very, very happy because just a few months ago, I was deeply devastated by what happened at the Thomas Cup. But praise be to God, I want to thank everyone who criticized me, who stood by me, and who continued to support and pray for me," Alwi said, as noted on the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) website.
Alwi noted that he had successfully read Dong's gameplay, having learned a great deal from watching the Chinese player's previous encounters against fellow Indonesian singles players Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah.
Leveraging the insights gained from his two compatriots, Alwi sought to meticulously analyze Dong's strengths and weaknesses on court.
"He has a tall frame, which makes his overhead smashes particularly sharp. In the opening game, I managed to control the pace. Things got tight in the second game, but I was able to get back to the pattern of the first game," Alwi explained.
Despite securing a BWF Super 500 tournament title for the second time in his career, Alwi admitted that he remains far from complacent with his latest achievement.
"This is because, as we all know, we have been facing a very challenging situation lately, and I hope that Indonesian badminton can improve soon," Alwi concluded.
