5.3M Earthquake Jolts Sunda Strait, BMKG Reports

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolting the Sunda Strait on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, at 6:50 a.m. local time.

Based on BMKG's analysis, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.60 degrees South Latitude and 104.63 degrees East Longitude, in the Sunda Strait, about 124 kilometers southwest of Tanggamus, Lampung.

"Modeling results show that the earthquake does not possess tsunami hazard," said BMKG's Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a written statement on Wednesday.

According to Daryono, the tremor is classified as shallow, originating from a depth of 47 kilometers. "The earthquake occurred due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate," he said, adding that the quake had a thrust fault mechanism.

The tremors were felt in Banten and Lampung, such as Cibeber, Bayah, and Pringsewu with a III MMI intensity scale. The quake was distinctly felt indoors, akin to a truck passing by.

Meanwhile, in Semaka, Pematang Sawah, Bandar Lampung, and Sumberjo, the tremors were felt weaker at a II MMI intensity scale, noticeable only by a few people and causing light hanging objects to sway. In Malingping and Banjarsari, the intensity scale of the earthquake ranged from II-III MMI.

BMKG noted no aftershocks as of 7:30 a.m., but urges residents to remain calm and avoid unverifiable news. Residents were also advised to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
