TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Four Indonesian airports will remain closed to flight operations until Monday evening as volcanic ash from the ongoing activity of Mount Anak Krakatau continues to disrupt air travel, including around Jakarta.
As reported by Detik.com, the flight suspensions have been extended until 6 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on September 7, 2026, due to increased eruptive activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait.
PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia, which manages the affected airports through InJourney Airports, announced the extension on Monday. The company advised passengers to regularly check their flight status with their respective airlines or contact the InJourney Airports Contact Center for the latest information.
The four airports with suspended flights are:
1. Soekarno-Hatta Airport (CGK): until September 7, 18:00 WIB
2. Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP): until September 7, 18:00 WIB
3. Radin Inten II Airport (TKG): until September 7, 18:00 WIB
4. Husein Sastranegara Airport (BDO): until September 7, 18:00 WIB
The latest disruption follows another eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau on Sunday night, September 6. The eruption was recorded at 8:23 p.m. WIB.
According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption was not visually observed. However, it was recorded by seismographs, with a maximum amplitude of 58 millimeters and a duration of 44 seconds.
Volcanic ash from the eruption also spread on Monday morning, reaching areas around Jakarta, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
In its latest assessment as of 6 a.m. WIB on September 7, BMKG identified two clusters of volcanic ash dispersion from Mount Anak Krakatau. The agency based its analysis on information from PVMBG and the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC), as well as an analysis of Himawari-9 RGB satellite imagery.
“Based on information from PVMBG and VAAC Darwin, as well as an analysis of Himawari-9 RGB imagery at 06:00 WIB on September 7, 2026, two clusters of volcanic ash dispersion from Mount Anak Krakatau were identified,” BMKG said in a statement on Monday.
The continued spread of volcanic ash has prompted the extension of flight suspensions as authorities monitor conditions and assess aviation safety. Passengers traveling through the affected airports are advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates.
