TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 200 students from 12 schools in the Tembok Dukuh area of Surabaya region in Indonesia experienced mass food poisoning after eating the free nutritious meal (MBG) on Monday, May 11, 2026. The menu of meat is suspected to be the cause of the poisoning.
The head of the Tembok Dukuh Surabaya Community Health Center, Tyas Pranadani, explained that hundreds of kindergarten, elementary, and junior high school students from 12 schools complained of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting after eating the MBG menu around 09:00 AM. They were immediately taken to the community health center and the nearest hospital.
According to Tyas, today's MBG menu consisted of rice, braised meat, vegetable dishes, fried tofu, and oranges. Tyas suspected that the poisoning was caused by the processed meat.
"Based on our observation from the teachers, this is the first time we included meat in the menu. So, it might be from the meat," Tyas said at the IBI Mother and Child Hospital in Surabaya.
Currently, all poisoned students are under the observation of the community health center. None of the students have been required to be hospitalized due to this poisoning.
Tyas stated that they have coordinated with the Tembok Dukuh Nutrition Fulfillment Service (SPPG) as the provider of MBG in the area. Currently, samples of MBG have been taken to the laboratory for testing.
Meanwhile, the head of the Tembok Dukuh Surabaya Nutrition Fulfillment Service, Chafi Alida Najla, apologized for the incident. She will conduct a comprehensive evaluation after this incident.
Regarding the suspected meat as the cause of poisoning, Chafi stated that they are still waiting for the test results from the laboratory. She claimed that the processed meat met the standards.
"The meat is not spoiled, perhaps it's from the processing or it was contaminated from the beginning. But we assure that the meat is still fresh," Chafi explained.
She mentioned that the Tembok Dukuh Nutrition Fulfillment Service processes MBG from 11:00 AM until midnight. Then, it is received by students at 09:00 AM. Every day, the Tembok Dukuh Nutrition Fulfillment Service provides 3,020 portions for 13 schools, including kindergarten, elementary, and junior high schools.
"Today we only distributed two thousand portions of MBG because of this poisoning incident. I have halted the rest for now," she concluded.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Coordinator of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) for the East Java Region, Teguh Bayu Wibowo, stated that they have immediately followed up and conducted an evaluation due to this incident. The operation of the Tembok Dukuh Nutrition Fulfillment Service has been temporarily suspended.
"We have directed a pause in the continuous distribution accordingly," Teguh said.
