TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta City Government in Indonesia will hold a second trial of Malioboro Street as a full pedestrian zone on December 1-2, 2025.
Unlike the initial trial in October, this round will introduce new measures, including access cards for residents and workers in the area, as well as adjusted timings to improve logistics and traffic management.
Fitria Dyah Anggraeni, head of the Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage Area Technical Implementation Unit, said on Wednesday, November 26, that the access cards are intended to facilitate trade and the transportation of goods while ensuring pedestrian safety.
“This second trial is part of efforts to organize a full pedestrian area in Malioboro, with provisions such as access cards for residents living or working here, so their activities are not disrupted,” Dyah explained.
The trial will coincide with the Malioboro Culture Vibes event near the Zero Kilometer Point. Certain sections of the street will be made two-way to allow easier access for tourists and traders.
Trial Schedule and Vehicle Restrictions
Dyah noted that this trial will run from 08:00 AM to 12:00 AM local time, rather than 24 hours as in the first trial. “The trial is not around the clock; it will operate from 08:00 to 24:00, alongside cultural events for residents and visitors,” she said.
During the trial, only non-motorized or traditional vehicles, such as pedal-powered rickshaws and horse-drawn carriages, will be allowed.
“The goal remains the same: to reduce emissions in Malioboro. Motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited,” Dyah added.
Addressing Potential Challenges
Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo said the full pedestrian trial aims to identify potential issues before permanent implementation, such as access for logistics operators and residents.
“Any challenges that arise will be studied to find solutions,” Hasto said.
During the first trial, some logistic vehicles faced difficulties delivering goods to hotels, shops, and restaurants. The city plans to provide specific access times and opportunities for deliveries to minimize disruption.
