Understanding Extreme Tourism: What Does It Mean?

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana emphasizes the importance of implementing standard operating procedures (SOP) in each extreme tourism destination. This reminder comes after the tragic death of Brazilian climber Juliana Marins while climbing Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on June 21, 2025. 'This incident reminds us that every extreme tourism destination carries serious risks,' Widiyanti was quoted by Antara on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

The climbing SOP for Mount Rinjani has been regulated in the Decree of the Head of Mount Rinjani National Park Number 19 of 2022. The ministry has also instructed strict supervision of extreme tourism operators, including retraining guides and porters on safety, emergency evacuation, and crisis communication.

What is Extreme Tourism?

Quoted from Wise Tour, extreme tourism is a type of travel that involves high physical challenges or potential dangers from the destination location or the activities themselves. For example, traveling to areas affected by nuclear disasters such as Chernobyl in Ukraine, diving in cages with large white sharks, trekking, and other activities with potential dangers.

Trends in Extreme Tourism

According to Axios, tourism expert James Petrick from Texas A&M University stated that technological advancements and increased interest in travel after the Covid-19 pandemic are the main drivers behind the rise in extreme tourism trends. 'There are very few places on this planet that have not been visited by people. The demand for unique travel is increasing its price and value,' Petrick said.

Globally, extreme tourism not only includes activities in nature. This trend also extends to expensive and high-risk travel such as expeditions to the Titanic wreckage, trips to the South Pole, and space tourism.

Incident of the Brazilian Climber

Climber Juliana Marins fell while climbing Mount Rinjani on Saturday, June 21, 2025. After the search, Marins was found dead at a depth of about 600 meters on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The evacuation process could only be carried out the next day due to the extreme terrain and bad weather.

Bali Mandara Hospital (RSBM) has completed the autopsy of Marins' body. The autopsy results concluded that Juliana Marins lost her life due to the fall, causing injuries all over her body, broken bones, internal organ damage, and severe bleeding.

Head of Public Relations Division of the Bali Regional Police Grand Commissioner Aryasandi stated that Juliana Marins' body would be flown from Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport through Dubai and onwards to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 'The repatriation of Juliana Marins' coffin has been approved for all routes by Emirates,' he was quoted by Antara, Monday, June 30, 2025.

Marins' body departed at 00:35 WITA on Tuesday, July 1. It is estimated to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on July 2 at 15:50 local time.
