TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said he wants a peace deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war to be struck before August 8, 2025. As reported by Arab News, this statement was conveyed by the United States during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

“Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear this must be done by Aug 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace,” said senior U.S. diplomat, John Kelley, before 15 UNSC members.

According to CNA, Trump also stated on Tuesday, July 29, that the United States will begin enforcing tariffs and other actions against Russia within ten days if they do not show progress in ending their military invasion.

Peace Negotiations in Istanbul

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have actually taken place three times this year in Istanbul, Turkey. As a result, the two countries only agreed on the exchange of prisoners and bodies, without reaching a breakthrough in resolving the three-year war.

Russia's Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, affirmed that Moscow still intends to continue the talks. However, he accused Western countries of backing the war. "We continue hearing voices of those who think that diplomacy is just a way of criticizing Russia and exerting pressure on it," said Polyanskiy at the same forum.

Ukraine's Call at the UN

Ukraine once again demanded the total cessation of Russian aggression. Ukraine's Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Khrystyna Hayovyshyn, emphasized the importance of unity and action from the international community.

She stressed that Ukraine wants a comprehensive, fair, and lasting peace based on the UN Charter. "We repeat—a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire is essential. It is the first step to halting Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," she said.

Russia's Recent Attacks

According to The Kyiv Independent, Russia launched another massive attack with hundreds of drones and eight missiles into Ukrainian territory on the night of July 31. Kyiv was one of the main targets, with at least 16 people killed and 159 others wounded in one of the deadliest attacks in recent weeks.

In the Sviatoshynskyi District, ten people were reported dead, while two others, including a six-year-old boy, died in the Solomianskyi District. The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, stated that as of 09:44 p.m. local time, the death toll reached 16 people, including two children.

Kyiv Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that three police officers and 12 children were among the injured. As of 02:40 p.m. local time, 30 people are receiving treatment in hospitals, five of whom are children. Klitschko added that the number of children injured in this attack is the highest since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

As a form of tribute to the victims, the Kyiv City Government has designated August 1 as a Day of Mourning. All government buildings in the capital will fly flags at half-mast, and all entertainment events are prohibited throughout the day.
