TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has released "America's AI Action Plan" for artificial intelligence development. The 25-page document contains 90 policy proposals aimed at strengthening America's standing in the AI sector, especially in competition against China.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the White House announced that the plan will expand global allies' access to American-made AI technology, and promote the construction of new data centers in various regions of the U.S. The government will also repeal several federal regulations that are deemed disruptive to AI development, but the details are not yet known.
U.S. Against China's Dominance
This plan is designed as a geopolitical and technological strategy. One of its main goals is to counter China's influence in international governance institutions related to AI.
The plan also includes a framework for analyzing China's artificial intelligence models to identify their suitability with the official narrative and the censorship of the Chinese Communist Party.
"We believe we're in an AI race, and we want the United States to win that race," said White House AI advisor, David Sacks, on Wednesday, July 23.
Promotion of U.S. Technology
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, "These clear-cut policy goals set expectations for the Federal Government to ensure America sets the technological gold standard worldwide, and that the world continues to run on American technology." The government will also streamline the licensing process for the construction of data centers and their supporting energy facilities.
However, as noted in the document, the focus on expanding AI infrastructure is not accompanied by specific attention to environmental issues. "AI challenges America to build vastly greater energy generation than we have today," the plan stated.
Allegations of political bias in AI are not new. Conservative groups have long criticized chatbots and AI systems that are deemed to lean towards liberal views, similar to their criticisms of mainstream media.
On the other hand, Elon Musk's GrokAI platform, a former ally of Trump, has been accused by its users of having a right-wing tendency. GrokAI, through its company xAI, is included in a $200 million contract with the Pentagon, along with other AI companies like OpenAI.
