TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The coach of the Thailand U-23 national team, Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, congratulated Indonesia on reaching the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup final after a penalty shootout victory.
"First of all, I would like to congratulate Indonesia for making it to the final. It was a very good match. Both teams played very well and in a fair play manner," Thawatchai said in a press conference following the match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday.
Thailand was eliminated in the semifinals after losing to the Indonesia U-23 national team in a penalty shootout at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Friday, July 25. Both teams were tied 1-1 after extra time, with Indonesia ultimately winning the shootout 7-6.
Thawatchai believed his team performed well, creating many opportunities even though they could not convert them into goals. "Although there were some mistakes, on the other hand, we were able to create many opportunities. Unfortunately, we couldn't convert them into goals," he said.
Thailand initially took the lead against Indonesia with Yotsakon Burapha's goal in the 60th minute. Jens Raven then equalized for Indonesia with his goal in the 83rd minute.
The 1-1 draw held through normal time and remained the same until the end of extra time. Consequently, the match winner had to be decided by a penalty shootout.
During the penalty shootout, an incident occurred when Thailand's third penalty taker, Songkhramsamut Namphueng, scored against Indonesia's goalkeeper Muhammad Ardiansyah.
The referee, however, deemed that Ardiansyah committed a foul, requiring the penalty kick to be retaken. Despite the re-take, Songkhramsamut again managed to deceive the Indonesian goalkeeper.
Regarding the incident, Thawatchai emphasized that his team respected the officials' decision. "That was the referee's decision. Everyone has done their duty, and we have to accept it," said the former Thailand national team player.
With this result, Thailand failed to advance to the final and will now compete for third place. The Young War Elephants will face the Philippines on Monday, July 29, at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta.
