TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Australian supplement giant Blackmores is facing a potential class action lawsuit over alleged health complications caused by the levels of vitamin B6 in the supplements.
Dominic Noonan-O'Keeffe, one of Blackmores' consumers, claims to have started taking Blackmores supplements in May 2023. He was unaware that the magnesium product he consumed contained potentially 'toxic' levels of vitamin B6. As a result, he claimed to have suffered severe symptoms, including fatigue, headaches, muscle spasms, palpitations, and loss of sensation.
He was later diagnosed with neuropathy related to excessive B6 intake. He stopped using Blackmores products at the beginning of 2024, but claims to continue suffering from nerve pain and other symptoms every day.
A spokesperson for Blackmores expressed a commitment to the highest product quality and consumer safety. "All our products, including those containing Vitamin B6, are developed in strict accordance with the regulatory requirements of the TGA," the spokesperson said, as reported by 7news.com.au.
Blackmores' Profile
As stated on its official website, Blackmores is an Australian company operating in the health sector. Its founder, Maurice Blackmores, was an English immigrant.
The origins of Blackmores date back to when Maurice opened the first health food store and naturopathy clinic in Brisbane, Australia. Together with his friends, he established the first naturopathic college and professional association in the country.
At that time, he held views on natural health, preventive medicine, the environment, and recycling that were considered radical. His work is said to have opened doors to new ways of treating diseases and maximizing health.
In 1960, Maurice developed 'celloid' mineral therapy through a number of naturopathic clinics, most of which were located in Queensland. What was once a family business, Blackmores became a private company on February 1, 1962.
The supplement producer continued to grow. In 1975, Maurice handed the company over to his son, Marcus Blackmores. Under Marcus' control, Blackmores' sales reached US$1 million a year. The company then expanded to Singapore and Malaysia in 1976.
After operating for 90 years, Blackmores was delisted from the Australian Security Exchange. On August 10, 2023, Blackmores was acquired by Kirin Holdings. The Blackmores Group became the primary brand in Kirin's health sciences business. The company employs 1,200 people in 12 markets across the Asia-Pacific.
They also have an academic and research center called the Blackmores Institute. According to the Blackmores Institute website, it is the academic and professional branch of Blackmores Limited, established in 2012. The Blackmores Institute aims to enhance and promote the quality use of natural medicine. The Maurice Blackmore Research Foundation was established in 1983 to honor Maurice.
Currently, the Blackmores Institute is expanding its vision by taking an evidence-based approach to building knowledge about natural medicine and sharing findings to improve the community. Blackmores' headquarters are located in Sydney, Australia, while their tablet and soft gel capsule manufacturing facilities are in Braeside, Victoria.
Blackmores is currently present in 14 countries, including:
- Singapore
- Australia
- China
- Hong Kong, China
- Taiwan, China
- India
- Indonesia
- Kazakhstan
- Korea
- Malaysia
- New Zealand
