TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto will inaugurate 80,000 Merah Putih Village Cooperatives on Monday, July 21, 2025, with the event centered in Klaten, Central Java.
Expert Staff of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Adita Irawati, said 103 cooperatives are being proposed as a model for future implementation.
"The stories of these 103 Merah Putih Village Cooperatives will be recreated in other villages, with the hope that they can operate fully by October 28, 2025," she said in a statement on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Adita explained that the village cooperatives are developed through three main approaches: creating new cooperatives, developing existing cooperatives, and revitalizing cooperatives.
Institutionally, the cooperatives consist of offices, grocery stores, savings and loan units, village clinics and pharmacies, cold storage, and logistics distribution. These facilities are expected to make it easier for the community to access basic necessities at more affordable prices.
"The community can also easily borrow capital without going through loan sharks. Healthcare services will be more accessible. Agricultural and marine products can be stored safely. Logistics distribution will also run smoothly," said Adita.
Adita hoped that village cooperatives would strengthen the village economy, improve food security, and alleviate poverty, while also preventing people from falling into illegal online loans or loan sharks.
The village cooperatives could drive local businesses, shorten distribution chains, and provide access to resources. They are expected to directly accommodate agricultural produce without going through the long supply chain that has been putting pressure on farmers' profits.
President Prabowo Subianto was previously scheduled to launch 80,000 village cooperatives, known as the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives, on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Klaten, Central Java.
On July 7, 2025, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, said that the launch of the village cooperatives would be followed by all provinces and districts.
Out of the 80,000 Merah Putih Village Cooperatives, only 500 of them have legal entities. Meanwhile, out of this number, only about 100 cooperatives are ready to serve as a model.
