No Ceasefire with Israel, Says Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi emphasized that Iran has never entered into a ceasefire agreement with Israel. He explained that the cessation of hostilities was a result of Israeli aggression coming to an end, not a formal ceasefire.

"There is no ceasefire between us. What exists is that due to the aggression against Iran ceasing, our defensive actions stopped," Boroujerdi said during a press briefing at his residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

He clarified that Iran's military stance has always been reactive, not offensive. "Of course, we never launch attacks on other countries. We always act in self-defense. We don't start wars but are always ready to defend ourselves," he added.

Israel's Attack During Nuclear Talks

Boroujerdi said the Israeli strikes came at a critical time when Iran was engaged in direct negotiations with the United States over its nuclear program. "The Zionist regime attacked when we had already conducted five direct negotiations with them regarding nuclear activities," he said.

According to him, the Israeli airstrike on June 13, 2025, severely damaged trust between the parties. “After this attack, the trust between each other has crumbled and no longer exists,” Boroujerdi stated.

He noted that the current phase of nuclear talks is focused on restoring confidence between the two sides. “Now we are in the stage of having to build trust, a sense of trust between each other,” he explained.

A Timeline of Escalations

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated into open conflict on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian infrastructure. The situation worsened when the United States joined the assault on June 21, striking Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Iran retaliated by launching a wave of missiles and drones at Israeli targets. On June 24, the United States announced that a ceasefire agreement had been reached with Iran, although Iranian officials insist no formal truce has been established.
