TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 500,000 people have fled to safety in Thailand and Cambodia since the latest outbreak of border clashes, surpassing the total number of evacuees during a similar conflict earlier this year, the two governments reported on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Civilians have had to evacuate in large numbers due to what we assessed as an imminent threat to their safety. More than 400,000 people have been moved to safe shelters across seven provinces,” Thai Ministry of Defense spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said at a press conference, as reported by France24.

We want to prevent a recurrence of the attacks on civilians we suffered in July 2025.”

In Cambodia, Ministry of Defense spokesperson Maly Socheata reported that 101,229 people had been evacuated to safe shelters and relatives’ homes across five provinces as of Tuesday night.

The two countries have long disputed an 800-kilometer border established during the French colonial era, with competing claims over historic temples triggering repeated armed clashes.

This week’s fighting is the deadliest since a five-day battle in July that killed dozens and displaced around 300,000 people on both sides.

A fragile ceasefire was negotiated at the time following interventions by then-US President Donald Trump and ASEAN President, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Both Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of reigniting the conflict. The latest clashes spread to five provinces on both sides of the border on Tuesday, with each side claiming the other violated the ceasefire.

Earlier reports cited by Thai news portal Khaosod said Cambodia launched an airstrike on Thailand’s Anupong military base on Monday, prompting Thai forces to retaliate by targeting Cambodian military infrastructure.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the country is prepared to take all necessary measures to ensure its security and sovereignty.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense called on the international community to condemn Thailand’s alleged violations of the peace agreement.
