MER-C Slams Israeli Strikes for Killing Indonesian Hospital Director in Gaza

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian humanitarian organization Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) strongly condemns the murder of the Director of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Dr. Marwan Al Sultan, in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Dr. Marwan was killed along with his wife and children at their temporary residence in northern Gaza.

"The murder of Dr. Marwan Al Sultan and his family is a blatant violation of humanitarian principles and a serious act of injustice that must be held accountable. This is a day of mourning for all human beings. We refuse to remain silent," stated Tempo's official release from MER-C Indonesia, received on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

Dedication in Humanitarian Crisis

Dr. Marwan Al Sultan is known as an interventional cardiologist and the leader of the Indonesian Hospital, which operated under minimal conditions due to the blockade by Israel since the beginning of the Gaza genocide in 2023. He continued to fulfill his duty of providing essential medical services to the Palestinian people, even after the Indonesian Hospital was blocked in December 2024, and he was forced out of the facility.

During the ceasefire in January 2025, Al Sultan reactivated the hospital services. He closely collaborated with international humanitarian teams from various countries, including the UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, and Morocco. Under his leadership, the Indonesian Hospital became the primary health service center in Gaza, not a military target as often claimed by the Israeli narrative.

Dr. Marwan was known for being open and cooperative. MER-C noted that between January and March 2025, their EMT team worked closely with Al Sultan to revive emergency services and restore hospital operations. "He was known to be open, spontaneous, and had strong leadership. The hospital's daily meetings often involved heated debates but always ended with jokes, coffee, and meals together," wrote MER-C.

International Condemnation and the Indonesian Government

The Indonesian government expressed condolences for Dr. Marwan's death. "We extend our condolences for the passing of Dr. Marwan Al Sultan, who is not an Indonesian citizen," stated Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizens' Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a written statement on Wednesday night.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health also referred to this attack as a deliberate crime against medical personnel and humanitarian efforts. The ministry's official release stated that every crime committed against medical personnel confirms the premeditated, bloody methodology of directly targeting them.

The murder of Al Sultan adds to the long list of civilian casualties in Israel's aggression in Gaza. The Palestinian Ministry of Health condemns this heinous crime against its medical staff. The ministry mentioned that Al Sultan has become a symbol of dedication, perseverance, and sincerity amidst relentless aggression.
