TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Days of heavy rainfall have triggered widespread flooding across at least nine cities and regencies in Indonesia’s Aceh Province, according to the Aceh Disaster Management Agency (BPBA).
The affected areas include Bireuen, Lhokseumawe, East Aceh, Langsa, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues, South Aceh, North Aceh, and Aceh Selatan.
For many residents, the disaster has also cut off communication. Teuku Zulman, an Aceh native now living in Jakarta, said he has been unable to reach his family in Langsa Baro and Langsa Barat subdistricts since Wednesday afternoon, November 26, due to a power outage.
“Communication access to Langsa has been completely cut off since yesterday. The latest information I received was that almost the entire city is flooded,” the 33-year-old said on Thursday, adding that others from Langsa faced similar difficulties contacting relatives.
BPBA confirmed that electricity and internet services in Langsa were shut down as flooding intensified.
“The area is entirely paralyzed. Electricity and internet access are down,” said Duty Officer Fauzan, noting that three telecommunications towers had collapsed and were undergoing repair.
Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and unstable geological conditions have caused both flooding and landslides since November 18.
According to BPBA, the floods have affected 46,893 residents from 14,235 families across the province, while 455 families, or around 1,497 people, have been displaced.
In Langsa alone, flooding over the past three days has been linked to runoff from PTPN I’s oil palm plantation area, submerging at least 110 houses in Seulemak Paya Bujok Village. Water levels of 20 to 40 centimeters were still reported on Wednesday, with no signs of receding.
Several districts, including West Langsa, Langsa City, Old Langsa, and East Langsa, also reported landslides alongside the floods.
Acting BPBA Chief Fadmi Ridwan said nine regencies and cities have declared a hydrometeorological disaster emergency status. The declarations, he added, were issued independently by local leaders based on conditions in their respective areas.
“The regions that have declared hydrometeorological emergency status are Aceh Besar, Pidie, North Aceh, Singkil, Abdya, Aceh Tengah, Aceh Tenggara, and Aceh Barat,” he said.
BPBA is coordinating with local disaster agencies to ensure emergency response efforts run effectively and urged residents to stay alert to the continued risk of flooding, land movement, and landslides as heavy rains persist.
