TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Kalimantan Provincial Government plans to construct a Floating Market Pavilion at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) in Jakarta. The Floating Market is a unique tourism attraction synonymous with South Kalimantan, boasting a 400-year history and still thriving in Banjarmasin today.
Governor of South Kalimantan, Muhidin, stated that the development of this distinctive local tourist attraction aims to draw visitors to the South Kalimantan Pavilion at TMII. Muhidin and the TMII management have agreed to enhance the pavilion's area to make it more appealing and a prime destination for tourists.
This miniature Floating Market will faithfully depict the various activities and vibrant atmosphere found at the Lok Baintan Floating Market in the Banjar Regency. "With such distinctive characteristics, it is hoped that a popular spot will be created," said Muhidin.
The TMII Floating Market is being constructed using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from Bank Kalsel. Previously, the South Kalimantan Provincial Government received Rp3.7 billion in CSR funds from Bank Kalsel based on its 2024 financial performance.
Additionally, the Governor of South Kalimantan also received dividends from the Regional Development Bank (BPD) of Bank Kalsel amounting to Rp55.5 billion, and from the regional-owned enterprise PT Bangun Banua, which reached Rp8.17 billion from their 2024 performance.
History of the Floating Market
The Floating Market is a unique marketplace where traders sell their goods from traditional wooden boats known as 'jukung.' Buyers can choose from a variety of agricultural and plantation products, as well as clothing and food.
According to the official website of the Banjarmasin city government, the Floating Market originated during the time of the Banjar Kingdom, established around 1595 AD. The area around the Floating Market was then managed by Patih Masih and Patih Kuin, both assigned by the local government to oversee the trading activities.
Initially, the market served as a place for bartering agricultural and plantation products. However, current transactions involve the use of currency. The goods sold are largely similar to those found in conventional land-based markets. Interestingly, the Floating Market primarily operates in the morning, from 06:30 to 08:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA), in Kuin Utara or the Floating Market on Jl. P. Tandean.
In addition to the Floating Market attraction, the South Kalimantan Provincial Government and TMII managers will also improve the facilities and infrastructure, ranging from management systems to the pavilion's physical infrastructure.
