TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandung Technology Institute (ITB), in Bandung, Indonesia, will eliminate the independent admission pathway for new students in 2026. The fourth best campus in Indonesia according to QS World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2026 will replace the independent admission pathway with the excellent student selection (SSU).
The Director of Student Admission at ITB, Achmad Syarief, said that the SSU pathway is based on achievements, both academic and non-academic. According to Achmad, ITB aims to make the admission selection of new students at their campus more inclusive.
Through this new selection system, he stated that students from lower to middle-class backgrounds will have equal opportunities to compete for a seat at the university with students from wealthier backgrounds. "This is an achievement pathway, not a financial one. We want to provide opportunities for talents from all over the archipelago to develop through ITB's education," he said as quoted on ITB's website on Monday, December 15, 2025.
Later, the SSU will be divided into two types of selection, namely non-test selection aimed at academically and non-academically outstanding prospective students. For example, participants with national talents who have participated in the national science olympiad or OSN, and have achievements in arts, sports, culture, religion, and the development areas of the outermost, frontier, and underdeveloped regions (3T).
Meanwhile, the second type of selection is regular selection. This selection uses ITB AQ, with an additional drawing test for those interested in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design and the field of Architecture.
Despite the independent admission pathway being replaced with SSU, the Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at ITB, Irwan Meilano, explained that other pathways for new student admissions namely the National Selection Based on Achievements (SNBP) and the National Selection Based on Tests (SNBT) will still be available.
Irwan, in fact, said that with the addition of the new system, this Ganesha Campus has opened up opportunities as widely as possible for the best prospective students to join. "By offering various admission pathways, ITB provides the widest possible opportunities for prospective students to learn and contribute to bringing about change for the nation," he said.
He emphasized that this transformation is a step for ITB to attract the nation's best sons and daughters. According to Irwan, this approach is in line with ITB's mission to attract outstanding talents from various regions and to foster future leaders of the nation.
"The refinement of the student admission system in 2026 is done so that ITB can obtain the best talents who are not only academically bright but also have strong competencies and characters," he said.
