TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs has addressed reports suggesting a risk of cancellation in the trade tariff negotiations between Indonesia and the United States.
Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the ministry, stated that there are currently no specific issues in the ongoing discussions, which have been underway since July 2025.
“Negotiations are still in progress, and it is normal to experience dynamics during the process,” Haryo said in an official statement on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
He added that the Indonesian government remains hopeful that a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached soon, ensuring fair trade opportunities and economic growth for both countries.
Concerns about a potential collapse of the talks have been reported by several international media outlets, including The Business Times and Reuters. According to a US government official, the threat arose after Indonesia reportedly withdrew some commitments initially agreed upon in July.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “They [Indonesia] have violated the agreements we made in July,” though no further details were provided regarding the specific commitments.
The negotiations were launched after the US imposed an additional 32 percent tariff on certain imports from Indonesia. In response, the Indonesian government has actively lobbied for reductions, even seeking zero tariffs on key commodities such as crude palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and rubber.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto previously stated that the negotiations are targeted for completion by the end of 2025.
Talks are still ongoing, with detailed discussions currently in the legal drafting stage, and both sides continue to explore ways to resolve differences amicably and maintain strong bilateral economic relations.
