Indonesian Immigration Deports 9 Foreigners Over Love Scam Involvement

4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Immigration and Correction deported nine foreign nationals for their alleged involvement in online fraud or scamming. Acting Director General of Immigration, Yuldi Yusman, said that these nine foreign nationals were also included on the watch list.

"Based on the examinations and evidence, these nine foreign nationals are charged under Article 122 letter a of the Immigration Law for violating their residence permits by committing online fraud with the love scam modus operandi which led to extortion of the victims," Yuldi said in his statement on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Yuldi stated that the deportation was carried out for nine foreign nationals, including four Chinese nationals, one Ghanaian national, and one Nigerian national. They were apprehended during a surveillance operation conducted in North Jakarta on June 11, 2025. Meanwhile, the two other Chinese nationals were arrested in a region in Bali on June 19, 2025, based on the information obtained from the interrogation of a Chinese national conducted by the Immigration General Directorate on June 16, 2025.

"From the operation in North Jakarta, officials found evidence of 40 smartphones and two iPads. Meanwhile, in Bali, officials seized 76 smartphones, seven iPads, and three laptops," Yuldi said.

Yuldi stated that based on the examination of these pieces of evidence, it is suspected that there are Love Scamming Jakarta and Love Scamming Bali chat groups.

"We found that there are still 3 more Chinese nationals in the love scamming Jakarta group and 7 Chinese nationals in the love scamming Bali group, whom we have put on the Immigration General Directorate's watch list," Yuldi said.

Yuldi added that the online fraud perpetrators were operating in Indonesia, targeting foreign nationals. "We emphasize that the Immigration General Directorate will continue to enhance surveillance, act firmly, and not tolerate any violations of immigration laws. We also urge all members of the public to actively report the presence of suspicious foreign nationals to the nearest immigration office," Yuldi said.
