TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) was colored by a symbolic action in support of Palestinians in Gaza. A member of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Sukamta, initially interrupted the session and invited all House members to show support for the people of Gaza by raising Palestine-themed posters.
"The situation in Gaza is concerning. When people can't be killed by bombs, they are killed by starvation," Sukamta said during the session on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Sukamta warned that tens to hundreds of civilians in the Palestinian enclave, including children and the elderly, die starving and lacking clean water every day. Therefore, he urged all House members not only to verbally voice support for the Palestinian people but also to show tangible support through symbolic actions.
"I request the leaders and all members of the parliament to raise their symbolic posters," he said.
In response to Sukamta's invitation, Deputy House Speaker Saan Mustopa welcomed the call to action. Saan also invited all members of the parliament to participate in the action.
"Let's raise the available posters," said Saan, referring to the poster themed with solidarity for the people of Palestine.
This action reflects the appeal to the international community to halt the genocide in Gaza and bolster the call to support all civilians affected by the conflict.
Israeli Attack Continues in Gaza
The latest bout of Israeli strikes occurred on early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2025. Israeli forces targeted an apartment in the Tel al-Hawa area, Gaza City, according to the official Palestinian news agency, WAFA as quoted by Anadolu. At least seven people, including children, a pregnant woman, and her fetus, were killed, and several others were injured in the airstrike.
The Israeli forces also targeted an ambulance near the Hamad Hospital for Rehabilitation in the northwest of Gaza City. The attack injured medical team members, according to medical sources quoted by WAFA.
International pressure mounts against Israel to stop the military campaign in Gaza and allow for unhindered aid delivery into the enclave. The people in Gaza still face food shortages despite eased restrictions on the aid blockade that had been in place since May, and aid seekers are regularly fired at by Israeli forces at several distribution points.
More than 100 humanitarian agencies have warned that mass starvation is spreading in the Gaza Strip. These humanitarian organizations include Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Save the Children, and Oxfam.
"As the Israeli government's siege starves the people of Gaza, aid workers are now joining the same food lines, risking being shot just to feed their families," they said, as quoted from Al Arabiya.
