TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman announced that the government will distribute rice and cooking oil to flood-hit areas across Sumatra, following days of severe weather that inundated multiple provinces.
The assistance package includes roughly 34 tons of rice and 6 million liters of cooking oil for Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
“In the event of a flood disaster, the government will send aid,” Amran said during a press conference at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Friday, November 28, 2025.
According to ministry data, Aceh will receive 10.6 million kilograms of rice and 2.1 million liters of cooking oil. North Sumatra will receive 16.8 million kilograms of rice and 3.3 million liters of cooking oil, while West Sumatra is set to obtain 6.7 million kilograms of rice and 1.3 million liters of cooking oil.
Amran said the supplies will be channeled through the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) in each region. He added that regional food reserves remain adequate despite the floods and that key agricultural production centers have not suffered major damage.
“It’s not a problem. The impact is minimal, whether rice or other commodities,” he said.
The minister said he plans to visit the affected areas to assess conditions firsthand, although several Agriculture Ministry officials were assigned to represent him on Friday. “I will follow up later once the situation has improved,” he added.
Heavy rainfall earlier this week triggered flooding in nine cities and regencies in Aceh, including Bireuen, Lhokseumawe, East Aceh, Langsa, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues, Aceh Singkil, North Aceh, and South Aceh, causing disruptions to electricity and internet access.
North Sumatra also reported flooding in Medan, Binjai, Deliserdang, and South Nias. Initial figures indicate 30 fatalities and more than 4,000 residents displaced. In West Sumatra, floods swept through 13 regencies and cities, including Agam, West Pasaman, and Padang, accompanied by strong winds and landslides.
