Government Mapping Hotels, Tourist Attractions in Indonesia, Including Bandung

7 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Ministry of Tourism is mapping Indonesia's tourism sector comprising hotels, restaurants, and tourist destinations across the country. The data is crucial to measure the opportunities and challenges within the industry, from hotel occupancy rates to the proliferation of illegal daily rental accommodations.

The ministry's deputy of industry and investment, Rizki Handayani, said there are many unregistered villas or houses rented daily, which affects the regions' revenues. "Including those in Bandung," she said, as quoted from the Bandung City government's website on Monday, July 21, 2025.

According to Rizki, daily rental places such as apartments or villas must be properly regulated, to avoid disrupting the sustainability of registered hotels. "Villas can be rented out, but not on a daily basis, maybe weekly; to make it fair for hotels that have obligations for permits and taxes," she said.

Potential of MICE in Bandung

The tourism official also believes that Bandung has great potential for organizing national- and international-scale events, especially in the MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, Exhibition) sector. The Ministry of Tourism calls for Bandung to hold thematic events targeting domestic and foreign tourists. "It's better to have a smaller number that stay longer and spend more," said Rizki.

She also proposed the development of gastro-tourism, wellness, and fashion-based tourism as the characteristics of Bandung. This can be done by creating tourism packages, for example, a 3-day package specifically for health tourism, involving hospitals and clinics directed towards medical wellness, and strengthening Muslim fashion and shoe crafts.

Mapping Tourist Profiles

Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, says that  in-depth mapping of tourist profiles is necessary for more targeted tourism programs. Relevant agencies need to identify guests—their socioeconomic class segment, behavior, or their shopping transactions, whether in cash or other means.

Furthermore, according to Farhan, manufacturers, such as those of shoes in Cibaduyut, need assistance in design and branding to be better known and have high selling value. The history and potential of the shoe center also must become a part of the city's branding.
