Gaza Death Toll Reaches 58,000 as Israeli Strikes Continue

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gaza Health Ministry reported that the total death toll since the war began on October 7, 2023, has surpassed 58,000. In the last 24 hours alone, 139 new casualties were recorded.

The casualties increased after Israel launched another airstrike on Sunday, July 13, 2025, targeting a bustling market in Gaza City and water distribution points in the Nuseirat refugee camp, resulting in the deaths of at least 95 Palestinian civilians.

According to Al Jazeera, the attack in the Gaza City market killed at least 17 people, including a renowned doctor, Ahmad Qandil.

A few hours later, another attack hit the water distribution point in Nuseirat, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 people. Seven of the deceased were children queuing for drinking water. Another 17 people were injured.

The war began when the armed group Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 others to Gaza. As of now, out of the approximately 50 remaining hostages, it is estimated that only around 20 people are still alive.

Israel Claims Mistaken Targets

The Israeli military has not issued an official statement regarding the attack on the Gaza City market. However, according to a report by ABC News, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the attack in Nuseirat was aimed at a Jihad Islami militant.

They claimed that the missile launched experienced a technical malfunction and fell "dozens of metres from the target." Israel stated that the incident is under review. This claim has yet to be independently verified.

Jessica Dorsey, an international law expert and lecturer at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, doubts the Israeli military's explanation. She believes that the attacks causing significant civilian casualties in Gaza indicate a concerning pattern.

"Mistakes do happen in war, but at a certain point, given the pattern of civilian harm that we’ve seen over the last 21 months, you have to question calling this a mistake, and in fact, actually interrogate whether this is indeed their modus operandi," Dorsey said in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Worsening Water Crisis

The attacks on water distribution points have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Fuel shortages have rendered desalination and sanitation facilities inoperative. The population now relies on water distribution centers to fill their plastic containers. These points often become sites of long queues, including among children.

Diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire are currently at a standstill. Palestinian and Israeli sources cite differences in positions regarding the extent to which Israel will withdraw its forces from Gaza as the main obstacle.
