TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) noted Rokan Hilir Regency as the area with the most wildfire points in Riau. Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who visited the affected area, said that a joint team was comprehensively handling the fires.
"There needs to be an increase in the intensity of fire suppression to resolve the wildfire in Rokan Hilir as soon as possible," Hanif said in a written statement on Wednesday, July 22, 2025.
The team combed through vulnerable areas, such as Bangko Pusako District, Kubu, Kubu Babussalam, Simpang Kanan, and Pasir Limau Kapas. The fires were found to have engulfed dry peatlands with minimal water sources.
Referring to KLH data, fire points were found in production forests and limited production forests that are prone to burning. As of July 20, 2025, the joint team consisting of KLH, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), authorities, and regional regulators found 354 hotspots in Rokan Hilir, nine of which were active fire points.
Efforts to suppress the fires were made through air and ground operations. By mid-July 2025, there were already 594 flight sessions to drop 2.37 million liters of water. Since July 21, weather modification operations in Riau have also aimed to reduce the spread of fires.
"We will continue to coordinate with all parties to end the emergence of smoke hazards in Rokan Hilir. The ongoing wildfire disaster has been enough," said Hanif.
He urged all stakeholders to actively be involved in handling this wildfire. Handling land fires, Hanif emphasized, is a priority in fair, sustainable, and responsive environmental governance.
