TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ten sports in the 2025 SEA Games, which were supposed to be held in Songkhla, Thailand, will be moved to Bangkok following the major flooding that hit the southern region of the country on Wednesday, November 26, 2025. In addition to concerns about the timely receding of water, the condition of the game venues is also considered unsuitable for use.
This decision was announced by the Deputy Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT), Chalitrat Chantarubeksa, following a meeting with the Chairman of the 33rd SEA Games Committee, Chaiyapak Siriwat, Minister of Tourism Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, and representatives from participating countries, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
Ten sports, with a potential total of 109 gold medals affected by the relocation, are boxing, pencak silat, football, chess, judo, kabaddi, karate, wrestling, petanque, and wushu. Sports associations are now seeking alternative venues in the capital city.
In addition to the damaged infrastructure, several participating countries also expressed concerns about the potential spread of diseases after the flood. Thailand is reportedly preparing a compensation mechanism for countries that have already booked tickets and accommodations in Songkhla.
The official announcement of the venue relocation plan is scheduled to be made after notification to the National Olympic Committee on Friday, November 28. With Songkhla no longer hosting, the 2025 SEA Games will be centered in Bangkok and Chonburi from December 9 to 20, 2025.
Cambodia Withdraws from Eight Sports, Including Football
Amidst the venue adjustments, the 2025 SEA Games also faced another issue. Cambodia reportedly withdrew from eight sports, including men's football. This information was reported by the Vietnamese media Vietbao and the Thai media Siamesport.
According to Siamesport, the Cambodian Olympic Committee has sent official documents to the organizers of the 33rd SEA Games, including the withdrawal of athletes from judo, karate, pencak silat, petanque, wrestling, wushu, football, and sepak takraw. Previously, Cambodia also refused to participate in billiards and Muay Thai.
As a result, Cambodia will only participate in 13 sports: swimming, athletics, esports, fencing, gymnastics, jujitsu, kickboxing, taekwondo, equestrian, jetski, triathlon, teqball, and volleyball. They cited security and athlete safety as the basis for their decision.
The withdrawal from men's football now leaves Group A with only two teams: Thailand and Timor Leste. There has been no decision yet on whether the organizers will conduct a new draw.
