TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives held a working meeting with Foreign Minister Sugiono today, Monday, June 30, 2025. The meeting discussed the geopolitical conditions and citizen protection.
The meeting was held at 10:00 a.m. Tempo's observation 15 minutes before the meeting started saw high-ranking diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as the director general for ASEAN affairs, Sidharto Suryodipuro; director general for Asia Pacific affairs, Abdul Qodir Jaelani; and State Protocol Chief Andy Rachmianto, already present at the location. House Commission 1 member TB Hasanuddin was also in the meeting room.
The meeting was opened by House Commission I chair Utut Adianto and led by deputy chair Budisatrio Djwiandono. Sugiono was accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir.
"This meeting will discuss geopolitics and the protection of Indonesian citizens, among others," said Utut, adding that the meeting will be open, but change may occur if the agenda is deemed related to Indonesia's strategic foreign policy.
Utut said on June 23 he would soon invite Sugiono to discuss Indonesia's stance on the conflict in the Middle East, especially the United States' attack on Iran.
Utut stated that the DPR will request the government to demonstrate its strategic position, maintaining its non-alignment nature. The politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is confident that President Prabowo Subianto understands his role at the moment regarding Indonesia's foreign policy stance in mediating the ongoing conflicts.
"The most important thing is to prioritize the non-aligned principle, the principle of national interest," said the former chess player.
Iran and Israel have been at war since the Tel Aviv military operation on Tehran on June 13, 2025. The aggression included air strikes and sabotage group infiltrations targeting nuclear facilities, prominent nuclear generals and scientists, and Iranian air bases. Israel accused Iran of secretly conducting a military nuclear program. The accusations have been repeatedly denied by senior Iranian officials.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington had joined Israel's efforts to destroy Iran's nuclear program capabilities by announcing attacks on three nuclear sites on Saturday, June 21. The move was met with international condemnation. Trump stated that a full and total ceasefire ended the "12-day war."
